As a director, I’m interested in stories that have a measurable impact within communities. Through the film Between Rhythms: Bridging Across the Diaspora, we focus on sharing the unique stories of Nigerians and second-generation Nigerian Americans. The film will be told through the perspective of our lead, Dr. Omotayo Banjo. Dr. Banjo is an associate dean at the University of Cincinnati's graduate school, a respected media scholar, and a second-generation Nigerian American whose curiosity about identity and belonging sparked the creation of the film. In a highly personal and impactful manner, our film follows Dr. Banjo as she meets and learns from musicians, chefs, small business owners, athletes, filmmakers, dancers, and a host of other people throughout the diaspora who can help answer our central question: What has led to the rise in popularity of Nigerian culture and why? Through in-depth interviews with leading scholars of Nigerian culture, and personal conversations facilitated by Dr. Banjo, the film embraces the richness and diversity of Nigerian music, dance, cuisine, film, and athletics. By adding an additional layer of identity exploration, the viewer will hear firsthand stories from a diverse set of people. I’m proud of the amazing creative team who have been an invaluable asset as we developed this important story. We’re exploring the culture from a critical, but also careful lens. It’s my goal to provide the viewer with a deeper understanding of this beautiful culture, which will hopefully inspire and instill pride.
